The Story:
The Battle of Badr was a major turning point in Islamic history. On the 17th of Ramadan, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stood with just 313 companions against an army of over 1000, a moment that became one of the greatest miracles in the early spread of Islam. None of them had set out expecting a battle, yet the moment arrived, and the Prophet ﷺ formed the believers into straight, solid rows, a new formation that unified men from different tribes into one force. Despite the overwhelming odds, they trusted Allah, made their effort, and Allah’s help came.
Before the battle, the Prophet ﷺ made abundant dua, raising his hands toward the sky in deep plea. He called upon Allah with such intensity that his upper garment slipped from his shoulders, and Abu Bakr RA gently wrapped it back around him, assuring him, “Allah will give you as promised.” Failure here would have meant the end of Islam, so the stakes were unimaginably high.
It was then that revelation descended: “I will reinforce you with a thousand angels…” Hearing this, the Prophet ﷺ turned to Abu Bakr RA with his face shining like the moon, filled with certainty that Allah’s help had arrived.
Badr teaches us that miracles unfold in ways beyond human comprehension, so long as sincere effort is made. The Muslims raised their swords and the army of angels fulfilled Allah’s decree, a true lesson in tawakkul. Allah swt also sent a miracle before the fighting began, as a form of spiritual support. When Prophet ﷺ threw a handful of sand towards the enemy, it struck the eyes of every soldier, causing confusion and fear, and giving the Muslims momentum in the battle.
Yet, this miraculous triumph came with the reminder that joy and sorrow coexist. As Madinah celebrated, and takbeer filled the air, the Prophet’s beloved daughter Ruqayyah was being buried. A lesson that this world is temporary and true happiness is only found in Jannah.
